Registration (K-8)
We are excited to bring many children back full-time into a school setting. Summer Rising programs will operate in hundreds of DOE buildings, giving students safe and supervised experiences in their neighborhood. Most students will be able to attend a program in their home building!
- For Summer Rising programs in grades K–8, families can sign up through the City’s Summer Rising (Open external link) page starting on Monday, April 26.
- All New York City students will have an opportunity to participate in the program.
- No student will be turned away.

Additional programs will be added on Mondays each week. Please complete this survey so we can be in touch to let you know when your school’s program is listed and help you through the registration process.
If your program is not posted in discoverDYCD yet, in addition to completing this survey, you should also create an account on discoverDYCD to receive email updates and learn about the new program locations added on Mondays.
If your student is a New York City resident who does not attend a DOE school, you should apply to a program that is in your neighborhood.
Registration (9-12)
High schools will reach out students in the coming weeks to discuss a summer program that meets their needs and interests.
Registration (Students with 12-month IEPs)
Families of students with 12-month IEPs were asked to complete a survey about their summer plans. Please contact your school if you did not receive the survey or would like to change your response.
Students with Extended School Year (12-month) IEP Program Recommendations
If your child in grades K-8 has an IEP that recommends an extended school year (12-month) program, and you would like them to participate in activities at a Summer Rising program after the end of their school day, visit the City's Summer Rising (Open external link) website beginning April 26 to register.
Families should select the Summer Rising site that is most convenient for them. This could mean enrolling in a Summer Rising program at (or close to) your child’s District 75, ASD Summer, or Extended School Year (ESY) site, or enrolling in a Summer Rising program that is close to your home. Registration for Summer Rising programs is ongoing. If you have not yet received your ESY site offer, you can wait until you receive that offer before selecting a Summer Rising program, or you can change your Summer Rising program registration at a later date to a more convenient location.
You can request for your child to be picked up from their D75 or ESY site and dropped off at their Summer Rising program, if they are in separate locations. If you have registered on the City's Summer Rising (Open external link) website and received confirmation of enrollment, and you are interested in the DOE transporting your child between the D75 or ESY site and the Summer Rising program, please complete the Alternate Afternoon Drop-Off Form here. The DOE will make all efforts to honor these requests and will notify families of the outcome.
Some students with disabilities may require additional supports to participate in the Summer Rising program’s extended hours. Additional supports, such as a paraprofessional, will be provided as needed.
If you have any questions about which Summer Rising program might be best for your family or about any additional supports your student may need to participate in the Summer Rising program, please reach out to your school Principal or [email protected].
Students with 12-month Related Services Only (Not students in D75 programs)
If your child's IEP recommends related services only (i.e., Speech, Occupational Therapy, or Physical Therapy) during July and August, you will be offered the opportunity to sign up for services at conveniently located sites in all five boroughs, many of which are also Summer Rising sites.
You can also change your Summer Rising program registration at a later date to a more convenient location, including to your child's related services site. The DOE will work with you so your child can receive their recommended services and participate in the Summer Rising program to the greatest extent possible. (Note: This does not apply to students in D75 programs. D75 students will continue to receive their related services at their Chapter 683 assigned summer school program.)
Please reach out to [email protected] as the summer approaches if you have questions about how your student's related services can be arranged.
School Meals
Students attending Summer Rising will be offered free breakfast and lunch daily. Snacks in the afternoon are available by request.
Our goal is to provide nutrient-rich options that students of all ages and backgrounds will love. Our meals maintain high nutrition standards that meet and often exceed USDA standards for school meals with whole grain-rich products, reduced sodium, and only fat-free flavored milk. We do not use food additives such as artificial colors or flavors, non-nutritious sweeteners, or preservatives. We also do not serve any items with high fructose corn syrup.
Please contact your school for more information on mealtimes and locations of service.
Health and Safety
All programs will follow rigorous health and safety protocols, including social distancing and mask wearing, and will have access to nursing support and a telehealth center. Parents and guardians will be asked to complete consent forms for mandatory periodic COVID-19 testing to participate in a Summer Rising program.
More information about testing protocols and health policies for summer will be available soon on the DOE’s COVID-19 Information and Updates page.
Commonly Asked Questions
Who is eligible to participate in a Summer Rising program?
All New York City residents who are currently in grades kindergarten-12 are eligible for Summer Rising programs. If your student is a New York City resident but does not attend a DOE school, you should apply to a program that is in your neighborhood.
Are Summer Rising programs in person?
We are excited to bring many children back full-time into a school setting. Summer Rising programs are full day, full week experiences that will create a bridge back to school in the fall. These in person experiences will give parents peace of mind as they return to work.
Are there any remote opportunities?
Summer Rising programs will operate in hundreds of DOE buildings, giving students safe and supervised experiences in their neighborhood. Most students will be able to attend a program in their home building!
Summer Rising are in-person programs designed to engage students with their peers, school communities, and school buildings. We are devoted to bringing children back full-time into a school setting and creating a connection to the fall. The only students who will have the option to participate remotely are those who are required to attend summer courses to be promoted to the next grade level and students with 12-month IEPs. If your student falls into one of these categories, you will be contacted about your learning preference (remote or in person).
Can I sign up for less than the full program (for example, half days or a half session)?
Summer Rising programs are designed to engage students with their peers, school communities, and school buildings in safe, supervised, and enriching ways. When registering for Summer Rising programs, families are signing up for full day, full week experiences. Please talk to your school if you want to sign up but have special circumstance.
Students with 12-month IEPs in grades K-8 can participate in Summer Rising programs after the end of their school day through the end of the Summer Rising program day (6pm). Families may register for a program at (or close to) their summer special education program, or close to their home.
Will there be summer school if my student needs academic support?
This summer, we are moving away from traditional summer school. For the first time, we will fully integrate the strengths of DOE academics and DYCD school-based enrichment programming into one comprehensive summer experience for young people. All students participating in Summer Rising programs will receive academic support.
Your school will contact you in June if your child needs to receive academic support to be promoted to the next grade level.
My student requires additional special education supports during the school year. Will they receive those same supports over the summer?
Students with disabilities may require additional supports to participate in the Summer Rising program’s extended hours. Additional supports, such as a paraprofessional, will be provided as needed. If you have any questions about which Summer Rising program might be best for your family or about any additional supports your student may need to participate in the Summer Rising program, please reach out to your school Principal or [email protected] (Open external link).
